Product Description

Mechotech designs and manufactures industrial solvent extraction plants for Clove Bud Oleoresin, derived from Syzygium aromaticum. Clove bud oleoresin is dominated by eugenol (7290%), with eugenyl acetate and Beta-caryophyllene as secondary constituents, making it one of the most potent natural antimicrobials and analgesics available. Our plants are engineered for high eugenol recovery with precise temperature control to prevent eugenol polymerisation.

Mechotech's Clove Bud Oleoresin extraction plants use food-grade ethanol percolation at 4055oC, carefully maintained to prevent thermal-induced eugenol oxidation and polymerisation. A multi-stage counter-current extraction maximises eugenol recovery from ground clove buds, while vacuum evaporation below 60oC preserves the active phenolic content. Systems comply with ATEX Zone 1, WHO-GMP, and FSSAI standards, and are validated for pharmaceutical-grade eugenol intermediate production.

Manufacturing Process

Raw Material Preparation
Dried clove buds (Syzygium aromaticum, moisture <10%) are inspected for quality, then ground to 2030 mesh in a stainless steel hammer mill. Temperature during grinding is monitored and controlled to prevent pre-extraction loss of volatile eugenol and avoid the formation of resinous tars.

Solvent Extraction
Ground clove bud powder is loaded into enclosed SS 316L percolators and extracted with food-grade ethanol (95%) at 4055oC. Ethanol dissolves eugenol, eugenyl acetate, Beta-caryophyllene, and tannin fractions into the miscella. Counter-current solvent flow in 34 stages ensures maximum eugenol extraction from the bed.

Miscella Filtration
The dark brown aromatic miscella is filtered through a vertical-plate sparkler filter to remove fine clove particles, followed by 2-micron polishing cartridges. Filtration performance is verified by turbidity measurement to ensure a clear miscella suitable for high-clarity pharmaceutical oleoresin.

Evaporation & Concentration
Filtered miscella is concentrated in a falling-film evaporator at 5060oC under vacuum (-0.08 MPa), followed by a short-path wiped-film evaporator that reduces residual ethanol to below 25 ppm. Recovered ethanol is purified through a molecular sieve bed and recycled at >95% efficiency.

Standardization
The concentrated oleoresin is tested by GC-FID for eugenol percentage and total phenol content. HPLC analysis quantifies eugenyl acetate and Beta-caryophyllene. Batches are blended to the target eugenol specification (typically 7290%) and adjusted for viscosity with food-grade vegetable oil if required.

Packing & Storage
Finished clove bud oleoresin is filled into food-grade aluminium tins or amber HDPE drums under nitrogen blanketing to prevent eugenol oxidation and darkening. Containers are stored at 1020oC away from light. The packing area maintains positive-pressure HEPA filtration to prevent microbial contamination.

Applications
  • Dental formulations - eugenol is an active ingredient in zinc oxide-eugenol cements, root canal sealers, and toothache remedies approved by dental pharmacopeiae worldwide
  • Food flavouring in bakery, confectionery, sauces, and ethnic spice blends requiring authentic clove aroma and mild antimicrobial function
  • Antimicrobial food packaging - eugenol-incorporated active films and coatings extend shelf life of meat, dairy, and bakery products
  • Pharmaceutical synthesis - eugenol is a key starting material for vanillin synthesis and other aroma chemicals
  • Personal care and cosmetics - antifungal and antibacterial properties applied in mouthwash, toothpaste, and skin-care formulations
  • Aromatherapy and spa products leveraging eugenol's analgesic and warming properties in massage oils and diffuser blends
  • Insect repellent formulations - eugenol and Beta-caryophyllene demonstrate effective repellency against mosquitoes and stored-product insects
Key Features

High Eugenol Recovery

Optimised extraction temperature (4055oC), solvent-to-material ratio, and multi-stage counter-current flow achieve eugenol extraction efficiency above 92%, consistently delivering oleoresin with 7290% eugenol content as measured by GC-FID.

Explosion-Proof Design
All electrical equipment in ethanol-contact zones is ATEX Zone 1 / IECEx certified. Fully enclosed extraction vessels with nitrogen padding and LEL alarm systems prevent ignition risk when handling food-grade ethanol at elevated temperatures.

Solvent Recovery System
Multi-stage falling-film and wiped-film evaporators with refrigerated condensers recover over 95% of ethanol per batch. A molecular sieve dehydration column restores recovered ethanol to >95% purity, significantly reducing raw material cost for ethanol-intensive clove extraction.

GMP Compliant Construction
SS 316L product-contact surfaces with electropolish finish, clean-in-place (CIP) capability, and a complete validation documentation package (DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ) ensure compliance with WHO-GMP and EU Pharmacopoeia standards for eugenol as a pharmaceutical excipient.

Multi-Spice Platform
The extraction system handles clove stems and clove leaf material in addition to buds, enabling a full range of clove-derived products. Changeover to other high-phenol spices (cinnamon, allspice) is accomplished through CIP cleaning and percolator bed reconfiguration within one shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical eugenol content and oleoresin yield from clove buds?
Quality Indonesian or Indian clove buds (1520% essential oil content) yield 1522% oleoresin on a dry-weight basis. Mechotech's extraction plants consistently deliver oleoresin with 7290% eugenol content by GC, depending on raw material grade and extraction protocol.

What is the difference between clove bud oleoresin, clove stem oleoresin, and clove leaf oleoresin?

Clove bud oleoresin has the highest eugenyl acetate content (contributing to a finer fragrance) alongside eugenol. Clove stem and leaf oleoresins are higher in free eugenol (up to 95%) but lower in eugenyl acetate, giving a harsher, more phenolic character. Mechotech's plants can process all three raw materials with adjusted extraction and standardisation parameters.

Is ethanol the only suitable solvent for clove bud oleoresin?
Ethanol is preferred for pharmaceutical and food-grade applications due to its regulatory acceptability and selective extraction of phenolic compounds. Hexane can also be used for an oleoresin richer in fixed oils and Beta-caryophyllene. For fragrance-industry customers, acetone extraction is sometimes used. Mechotech's plants support all three solvents with appropriate safety engineering.

What certifications are relevant for pharmaceutical-grade eugenol applications?
For pharmaceutical-grade eugenol oleoresin, Mechotech's plants are designed to comply with WHO-GMP, BP/EP monograph standards for eugenol (assay >98% for further-purified grade), ICH Q3C residual solvent limits, and ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 for ethanol handling. Full IQ/OQ/PQ validation documentation is supplied with the plant.
